Today is the feast of the Ascension of the Lord. In today’s Gospel selection from St. Matthew, we read what has come to called the “missionary mandate” that Jesus gave to his disciples before he ascended into heaven. We read:
“The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, ‘All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age'” (Matthew 28: 20-26).
A “mandate” is a command, and as Pope Francis continually reminds us, all baptized persons have this missionary mandate. That means that all of us are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. Parents do that with their children as part of their vocation. But all of us are called to share the good news of Jesus by being “living homilies,” living our lives in such a way, that others will seek to learn our “secret.”
How are you doing being a “living, walking, homily”?
