Giuseppe Nascimbeni was born on March 22, 1851 in Torre del Benaco, Verona, which was in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia (now Italy).
On August 9, 1874, at the age of 23, Giuseppe was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Verona and was assigned to a remote parish in Castelletto del Garda. In that area, he found that the people lacked basic services such as adequate plumbing and electricity for their homes. So, Fr. Giuseppe worked to get such services for the townspeople, and he worked to establish mail and telegraph services so that the people could be more in touch with others in the nation.
Fr. Giuseppe, who had a few years of teaching elementary school behind him, also founded a craft school. He realized, however, that he needed help providing basic education for the children. He asked the Ursuline Sisters to come to his parish to take over teaching, but they were unable to do so. Although he was very discouraged with that news, he didn’t give up. Rather, he decided to find local women to help him with teaching and other projects in which he might become involved. This group became its own religious order called the Little Sisters of the Holy Family, and Pope St. Pius X approved it in 1909.
On New Year’s Eve, 1916, Fr. Giuseppe had a stroke and spent the last years of his life in a wheelchair. He also suffered from other conditions during that time including influenza and diabetes.
Fr. Giuseppe died on January 22, 1922 at the age of 70. He was beatified on April 17, 1988. Blessed Giuseppe Nascimbeni’s feast day is January 22, and the order he founded has spread throughout the world.
