Pope Francis established September 1st as the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. September 1st marks the beginning of a special “creation time” that goes from September 1 through October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.
During this special time, Catholic Christians are called to pray for the wisdom and courage to care for our planet’s plants, animals, air, and water. And, we are called to remember to pray for the poor and marginalized, the prisoners and all abused people.
We can celebrate this special time by planting a tree or giving to groups that seek to become better stewards of God’s creation.
In the above photo, we see Juan García of the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary in Wilmington, North Carolina, our sister parish. Juan, who cares for St. Mary’s campus, is an incredible example of a person who is a model for all people on how to care for the earth.

Thank you father for evaluating my work and thank you for the beautiful comments those who wrote.
So blessed to have this wonderful person in my life. He has a heart as big as all outdoors.
So well deserved. He is the very quiet caretaker of our beautiful campus. You know that he does this work because he loves it.
Father, you are right on point as always. Thank you for recognizing Juan, we would be lost without him here.
