Driving in rivers

In the United States, there is a safety slogan that probably everyone has heard: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

The slogan is meant for drivers to avoid driving into water that is caused from heavy rains, so one can’t tell how deep the water is, how strong the currents may be, or what dangerous objects might lie just below the surface of the water.

So, when I first came to Honduras, I was amazed that we routinely must drive through rivers to get to some of the communities of our parish that have no bridges connecting them.   This works well during the summer months (November through April), when such rivers are not too deep and the currents are not too strong.  In the winter months (May through October) when we often get heavy rains, we cannot visit many of the churches of our parish because the rivers are too wild.
