Five years ago, Pope Francis created a powerful encyclical titled Laudato Si. This letter, addressed to the entire planet, talked of our responsibilities to care for creation. That means we are to be responsible stewards of what God has given us. The call to action in the document is to work for an environment which is healthy for humans.
Pope Francis said, “I renew my urgent call to respond to the ecological crisis. The cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor cannot continue.” As Francis noted, destruction of water, air, and rainforests affects the poor most severely of all.
From May 16-24, 2020, Catholic Christians and other people of goodwill, will celebrate “Laudato Si Week.” This week challenges each of us to ponder the question: What am I doing to protect the environment?
