The traditional Catholic Advent wreath has three purple and one rose-colored (pink) candle. On the first, second, and fourth Sundays of Advent, we light a purple candle, and on the third Sunday of Advent, we light the pink candle. Sometimes, people put a white candle in the middle of the Advent wreath to light on Christmas Day.
In Honduras, however, many people are used to a different type of Advent wreath, one that features red, green, blue, and pink candles. There are even special blessings associated with each colored candle, depending on the Sunday it is lit. And like the traditional Catholic Advent wreath, many people put a white candle in the middle at Christmas.
Why there is a different type of Advent wreath in Honduras is something I don’t know, and when I have asked folks why this is, they don’t know either.
In the above photo, we see a traditional Honduran Advent wreath in the church in La Libertad, F.M., Honduras, one of the pueblos of our parish which is about a 1-hour drive from the parish’s seat in Reitoca. This photo was taken on the Third Sunday of Advent.
