Lent 3 C – Second Chances

Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent.

On this day, we read about Jesus telling a story called the Parable of the Barren Fig Tree (Luke 13: 1-9).  In this parable, the owner of a vineyard comes to view a fig tree in his orchard, but the fig tree, for the third year in a row, has produced no figs. So, the owner told the gardener to cut it down, for it was just taking up space.  The gardener, however, pleaded with the owner to give the tree another chance. The gardener promised to give the fig tree special attention, cultivating it and fertilizing it.  Then, the gardener said, if doesn’t produce after the extra attention, it could be cut down.

This is a story of second chances.  Like the barren fig tree, we also need second chances in our lives.  And fortunately for us, we get that opportunity.  In fact, for Catholic Christians, we treasure the sacramental gifts that Jesus gave us that take away sins, gifts such as the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation, and Sacrament of the Sick.
