This is Bernardo Lourdes Posadas Osorto who was commissioned as a Delegado de la Palabra of the Reitocan community of Santa Cruz on May 3, 2022. In Honduras, the feast of the Holy Cross is on May 3, not September 14 as it is for most of the Catholic Church throughout the world.
Delegados de la Palabra are men and women specially trained to lead their church communities. They conduct Liturgies of the Word on Thursdays and Sundays when there is no priest available to celebrate Mass, visit the sick, care for the church and other physical holdings of the church, do paperwork necessary for parish life, ensure there are catechists and other ministers for the community, baptize babies when necessary, lead novenas following deaths in the community, and a host of other duties. Because our parish has 87 churches, with three more under construction, and because we only have 4 ordained priests, most churches do not see a priest very often. Without the Delegados, there would not be an official Catholic presence in the mountain communities of our far-flung parish. Delegados are golden! Congratulations and best wishes to Bernardo!
