Memorial Day – USA

If the days of American “summertime” were books, Memorial Day and Labor Day would be their bookends, for Memorial Day comes at the end of May, and Labor Day comes at the beginning of September.

Today, Americans celebrate Memorial Day, a day on which we remember those who gave their lives while serving their country in the Armed Forces.  Although it was first observed as a holiday to honor only those who lost their lives in the American Civil War (1861-1865), today it honors all who gave their lives while in the military service.

The symbol of the day is the poppy, for it was the poppy that grew in the fields of Europe at burial sites when no other flower was visible.  In 1915, a Canadian soldier, John McCrae, wrote a poem called “In Flanders Field.” In the poem, John talked about the poppies growing between the crosses of the graves of the fallen soldiers.  John McCrae was an author, poet, physician, and soldier.

But it is a good idea for Hondurans, and people of every nation, to reflect on the sacrifices made by all military personnel who died in the service of their country.  And then, give thanks.
