OT 29 B – The Servant-Leader Model

Today, Catholic Christians celebrate the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

In today’s Gospel reading, we hear how James and John, the sons of Zebedee, asked that in the next life, they be permitted to sit on either side of Jesus in glory.  When the other apostles heard of this request, they were infuriated at James and John.  So, Jesus summoned all the apostles together and said:

“You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt.  But it shall not be so among you.  Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.  For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mk 10: 42-45).

The words of Jesus have come to be known as the “servant-leader” model of leadership.  Although this model is directed especially at ordained priests, it is relevant to all followers of Jesus.  We put this type of leadership into action by putting the needs of others before our own needs, and by recognizing that Christ lives in all people and treating them accordingly.
