OT 5 C – Jesus Blesses Fishermen

On this Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we read the fascinating story of Jesus blessing Simon and his fellow fishermen (Luke 5: 1-11).

As the fishermen were cleaning their nets after a night without catching any fish, they encountered Jesus.  Jesus tells them to go back to the sea and drop their nets again.  Simon and his colleagues did as Jesus directed, and as a result, they caught so many fish, their nets began to tear.

So, what is the moral of this story?  Like Simon, often we have a problem in our life.  We try all different solutions, and none of them seem to work.  Only when all our solutions fail do we remember that we forgot one important thing: to ask God for help.  Then, when we turn our problem over to God, it feels like a huge weight is lifted off our shoulders.  Miraculously, the problem gets solved one way or another, and we move on with our life journey.

When was the last time God helped you overcome a problem you had?  Did you remember to thank God for the help?
