Our Reward – OT 13 A

In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew, Jesus says:

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.  Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.  And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple – amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward” (10: 40-42).

Christians do good works because that is a commandment of Jesus – feed the hungry, clothe the naked, console the sorrowful, forgive our enemies, and so on.  We should not do good deeds to be rewarded.  However, it is comforting to know that reward is part of God’s plan for us!  The wonderful news for each of us is that we all have plenty to give – time, talent, and/or treasure.

What do you have to give today?
