Sanctuary Lamp

The Sanctuary Lamp in Catholic Churches is lit to alert people that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the building.  Although often this lamp has red glass, it does not need to be red.  In today’s photo, for example, we see a clear sanctuary lamp in the chapel of the Casa Sacerdotal – Priest House – on the San José Campus of Universidad Católica de Honduras.

Where I serve in southern Honduras, most “sanctuary lamps” are electric.  As a matter of fact, in the parish I serve, San Francisco de Asís, I don’t know of any of our 41 churches that have a fire-based wax candle as a sanctuary lamp.
