In today’s Gospel selection from St. Matthew, we hear Jesus say:
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct” (16: 24-27).
The “daily crosses” about which Jesus spoke refer to the daily trials and tribulations each of us face in our lives. Maybe we didn’t get the job we wanted, or we’re in debt, or our child is sick, or whatever. What we are supposed to do as Christians is to embrace our trials and tribulations and deal with them as graciously as we can. We also need to ask ourselves, when faced with these crosses, what we can learn from them. How can they help us grow in the spiritual life?
What kind of crosses do you carry? What are you learning?
Today’s photo shows 3 crosses in Reitoca, F.M., Honduras that Fr. Gerardo had built when he was pastor of our parish – San Francisco de Asís. The crosses are at the entrance of Monte Fresco, a neighborhood of Reitoca.
