The photo above is taken from the deck of the Four Martyrs’ House on the Holy Cross Campus in Reitoca, F.M., Honduras. The house is dedicated in memory of four women martyrs of El Salvador who were killed on December 2, 1980: Maryknoll Sisters Maura Clarke and Ita Ford; Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel; and Jean Donovan. Most people, however, call the house “Father Bob’s House.”
The photo above shows a typical storm coming from the eastern mountains. In Reitoca, the seat of our 250-square-mile parish, the temperatures are almost always hot in the daytime. But we have two seasons: winter (May 1 – October 31); and summer (November 1 – April 30). I call our winter the jungle time, for it often rains in the late afternoons, and I call our summer the desert time, for we can for months without a drop of rain.
Typical rains can be absolutely ferocious, reminding one of movies where ships are being tossed about in the seas. Then, after an hour, the storm stops, and calm returns.
